Leadership cannot be defined by a single formula. Each successful leader combines his talents, expertise, and charisma to get people to work towards achieving his goals and/or the goals of his organization. You probably have one or more people that you admire and/or respect for their leadership.

Amazon is expanding its operations in New Mexico Utah, and Arizona and is conducting a search for a Southwestern Regional Manager operating out of new offices in Phoenix. The challenge for the new Manager involves all of the four key elements of management (planning, organizing, leading, and controlling). They are interviewing potential candidates and in the process are asking each of the candidates to outline how they would implement the new operations center. The Amazon mission statement says, "Our vision is to be earth's most customer-centric company; to build a place where people can come to find and discover anything they might want to buy online."

If you were a potential candidate, how would you respond to this important interview question?

The following questions are offered to stimulate your thinking:

-Planning: What are the three most important start-up issues? How long do you expect before full functionality?

-Organizing: What type of organization would you propose? Would you separate distribution functions from ordering and placement? How would you connect to the central Amazon computer network?

-Leading: What kind of leadership "style' would you employ? Use information you learned about yourself in the Personality Test to help describe what kind of approach you naturally take. How much authority and responsibility would you allocate to department managers and customer service representatives? What specific goals would you set for the local employees, if any?

-Control: Where would you recommend finding the people to staff the office - external or redirect from other Amazon locations? What would be your compensation plan?
