How to Write an Article Critique (Must be 2 pages maximum, double-spaced, 12pt. Times New Roman font)

  • An article critique is an overview and interpretation of a research article.
  • Critiques give additional insight into the strengths and weaknesses of an article, as well as provide an analysis of its main points.
  • To adequately critique an article, you must understand what it is you are critiquing.

Instructions

1. Preparation

1 Read the article. Try not to make any notes when you read the article for the first time.

2 Read the article again, paying close attention to the main objective(s) or thesis of the articleand the supporting points that the article uses. Reading the article more than once helps to ensure that you haven't missed any important details.

3 It is important to consider the author's expertise and possible biases that may be tied to his perspective.

4 Consider the credentials of the sources used in the article. Are the sources used to support the author's claims authentic and respectable? Published works such as books, journals and other scholarly (peer-reviewed) sources are a few of the adequate sources of information that an author may source.

2. Writing the Critique

5 Begin by writing APA style citation of the reference in which you are critiquing at the top of your page. (See example below).

Anderson, C. A., Allen, J. J., Plante, C., Quigley-McBride, A., Lovett, A., &Rokkum, J. N. (2019). The MTurkification of social and personality psychology. Personality and social psychology bulletin45(6), 842-850.

6 Compose an introduction. In one to two paragraphs, the introduction should include the author's name, the name of the article, and the thesis or main point of the article (i.e., why is this research being done? Is it useful or necessary to investigate these variables?)

7 Summarize the article's supporting points by providing an overview of the author's main points/evidence cited that are used to back up their claims (this is part of the body of your written article critique).

8 What did the author(s) find? Provide a brief interpretation of the results section of the manuscript. Was any group influenced by the intervention (either favorably or detrimentally)? Were their findings in line with their research hypotheses? (this is part of the body of your written article critique).

9 Determine whether or not the supporting points provided hold up the article's main points adequately and compile your evaluation and review of the article.

  • Do you agree with the author?
  • Did the author use appropriate methods to gather the evidence?
  • Was the evidence used by the author accurate?
  • Are the article and the evidence still valid or are they outdated, perhaps leading to an invalid conclusion?
  • In your opinion, was the author successful in making his/her point?

IMPORTANT: Back up your statements by stating your reasons. (this is part of the body of your written article critique).

10 Your conclusion should consist of one to two paragraphs that contain a general opinion of the article, state your agreement or disagreement with the author and the reasons for your conclusion. What did you like and what did you not like about the article?

  • Edit your written critique. Remember your best finalized written work should be presented to your college instructor. Don't make silly mistakes.
  • Attach a copy of your article to your completed written critique and hand it in on time.
  • It needs to be uploaded on Blackboard or emailed to Adam.

You can discuss the article with other members of the group, but the critique must be written and submitted individually.
