Problem - Threat to the ancient monuments due to the ongoing work of mass rapid transit system in the old town

Description - The issue relates to the threat that some of the old monuments face due to current ground breaking, drilling and tunneling work of the mass rapid transit system in the old city. The old town is home to some of the heritage monuments that date back to 1300 AD. These monuments have been declared as national heritage by the archaeological survey of the country and are of extreme importance for historical, religious and sociological research. A Public Interest Litigation was filed by a citizen group, on which hearing is due, however, stay could not be secured. The monuments which are too old to bear the brunt of vibrations that they are subject to, are under immense threat.

The effect of construction is visible. One can see the cracks in the walls of a dome, which is a recent phenomenon. A small part of wall also collapsed last month, compromising the safety of the employees of the survey as well as tourists that visit the sites regularly. The situation is grave and needs immediate attention from the authorities.
