At the same time Europeans were venturing east to the Americas, they were also traveling south to Africa. This resulted in a significant disruption to the indigenous cultures of Africa. The arrival of European Christian missionaries, military groups and traders began a period of exploitation and global trading. Muslim traders also began to spread the Islamic religion and culture in the Sahara region during this time.
