Think of a moral dilemma in your own life, and the action or actions you took in order to resolve this particular dilemma. Note that, while you are welcome to discuss a heavier topic (such as a life-changing moral dilemma), you are also just as welcome to discuss a lighter topic (an example of a lighter topic I usually consider is: If you are in an elevator, and a person in the distance is running towards the elevator yelling, "Hold the elevator! Hold the elevator!", do you push "Door Open," or "Door Close"?).
In this homework assignment, please provide a brief one-paragraph description of this particular moral dilemma in your life.
Next, consider how a moral relativist would respond to your moral dilemma, and think about the ways Mark Timmons would criticize the moral relativist. In order to fulfil, please answer the following questions:
Considerations of Moral Relativism:
1. What might be the relevant norms of the particular society you are in?
2. What do the norms say about the acceptability of the particular action in question?
Criticisms:
1. Moral argument - Does the action seem to support something that goes against your deepest convictions about right and wrong? How so?
2. Argument from genuine disagreement - Is there a genuine disagreement between sides over what is right or wrong?
3. Moral reformer argument - If the action or practice were reformed or removed, would you consider that an improvement? Why and how?
4. Context sensitivity - Are there any non-moral facts or circumstances which help to determine the extent of one's moral responsibility in the situation? Despite the non-moral facts, can you nevertheless see at least one universal moral value present? If so, what is it?
5. Moral diversity thesis - Have you made attempts to understand that action from the point of view of the culture or society as much as possible? Even so, can you still recognize that something in the action may violate one or more universal moral values?
6. Does the action in question violate the principle of reasonable tolerance? If so, how? If not, why?
