You are working as an RTA in a 150-bed complex care facility. You are assigned to the Cedar Cottage Unit where you have 32 Residents of varying ability. The residents of this unit require a high level of assistance with activities of daily living. They each have their own rooms, with just a bed, toilet and sink, small sitting area and no balconies - but there is a courtyard with easy access from the unit. The courtyard has bird feeders, raised beds for gardening and a covered area. You have access to a community kitchen on the unit.
When a new resident is admitted to your unit a Leisure Interview is completed and a Life Story is recorded as part of the Leisure interview. Your role as an RTA is either to record the Life Story from your interview with the Resident and/or their family or to contribute to the Life Story in collaboration with the Recreation Therapist. The Life Story becomes the starting point of all of your work with each resident because it helps you understand who they are and the context of their life.
Questions:
-In this case, recording the Life Story is your job - develop a Life Story (a summary of the person's life, accomplishments, important events, important people in their life etc.) on any person that you know well.
-Compare the information you have in your Life Story to the information you had on Mary Baker - would you find it easier to provide support for the person you did the Life Story on? Why or Why not?
-Think about the importance of belonging - social connection. Think about what it would be like to be new on the Cedar Cottage Unit. What could you do in your role as an RTA to help new residents feel welcome, connected and safe when they move into their new home?
