Think about the ending of the play Titus Andronicus. The play ends with what looks like a restoration of order-most villains (and others!) dead, and Lucius installed as the new Emperor. The play is a tragedy for most characters, though-and there are some loose ends, like the army of Goths now present in Rome, or Aaron's son being raised by Lucius, or perhaps questions about how good an Emperor Lucius will be! Imagine you're a citizen in Rome at this moment. Would you feel reassured or optimistic about the future-or not? Why, or why not? Thinking about your Machiavelli and Jefferson and Leggatt readings, and about the ending of the play (what are Lucius's first commands as Emperor, for example?), how do you feel about your new ruler and the future?
