Jen is a graduate student working toward her degree in psychology. She is seeing an REBT therapist at her college's counseling center to discuss her concerns about going home for the Thanksgiving break. She tells her therapist that she does not want to disappoint her family, but she is considering not going home for the Thanksgiving break. "It's only a few days and I have so much to do here," she rationalizes to her therapist. However, later in the session, Jen admits that she hates going home because she believes she "regresses" when she gets around her parents and siblings. "I feel so competent and independent in my life here. Whenever I go home, I suddenly forget how to do my own laundry, become petulant and pick fights with my sisters. I hate myself afterwards."
