Therapeutic communication is an essential and invaluable aspect of being a nurse / student nurse. As we begin to have more exposure to patient interactions the aspects listed will be crucial to help guide the relationships we create with our patients. During my recent clinical experience, I was able to put this into practice. My patient had minimal verbal communication. Her responses were usually one-word answers, and she was able to respond to yes or no questions. I felt as though I relied on a lot of the listed therapeutic communication aspects. However, the three that I relied on the most were; non-verbal communication, empathy, and validation. Non-verbal communication played a significant role during my interactions with my patients. I was able to engage by using therapeutic touch in times while my patient was displaying signs of discomfort. I always was vigilant on reading her non-verbal cues. I did this by becoming familiar with her facial expressions as well as noting that when she was in pain or something was not comfortable, she would say "mom" or would grimace and let out a sigh.
