Question
When Darwin proposed the theory of evolution by natural selection, one of his most remarkable proposals was that humans, along with all other forms of life, have evolved from a common ancestor. He argued that, if this claim were true, the history of shared ancestry would produce detailed patterns that any person should be able to observe in all organisms, past and present, and that these patterns were inconsistent with other explanations for the history of life. Importantly, Darwin did not even know what DNA was; he focused instead on anatomy, physiology, and behavior. But if the claim of shared ancestry were true, its patterns must be observable in all biological properties, including those that would be discovered much later, such as DNA sequences. Describe three such patterns that are observable in the genomes of living organisms and explain why each supports the hypothesis of shared ancestry among different species.
