Truncated Literature Review
A review of literature is the foundation for the advancement of knowledge in every discipline; therefore, it is a vital element of every research project. A "substantive, thorough, sophisticated literature review is a precondition for doing substantive, thorough, sophisticated research. A researcher cannot perform significant research without first understanding the literature in the field." (Boote & Beile, 2005, p. 3).
A literature review should explain how prior research is closely linked to a new idea or project; it should summarize and synthesize what is known; it should identify gaps in the knowledge base; and it should uncover areas where more research is needed (Webster & Watson, 2002, p. xiii)
While a graduate-level literature review for a thesis or a dissertation is a compilation of nearly all of the significant previously published research on a particular topic, for this assignment you are asked to craft a truncated literature review of three (3) significant previously published research articles. Remember: a literature review is much more than a summary of related literature; it is a synthesis.
Step One: Select an important topic or issue that could inform your vision of powerful social studies.
Step Two: Once you have selected your topic or issue, conduct a "substantive, thorough, sophisticated review" of significant previously published research-not simply advocacy articles-on that topic. Below are a few journals that may help. this is not an exhaustive list:
Journal of Social Studies Research
Social Studies Research and Practice
The Social Studies
Theory and Research in Social Education
Contemporary Issues in Technology and Social Studies Teacher Education
Step Three: Read as many articles as you find that concern the topic or issue; be sure to make substantive notes from each article. Appendix 3B may be helpful; it is a scaffold for collecting data from a research article.
Step Four: Determine which three (3) articles are the most educative for your topic and synthesize them into a review of the field's current understanding of the topic.
Content is expertly summarized, analyzed, and evaluated. Author's big ideas / concepts are central focus for reflection. Clear evidence for scholarly analysis and interpretation.
Clear connections are made between reading's content and personal perspectives or experiences. Personal experiences are reflected upon in light of current or future practice and class readings / professional discourse. Depth of thinking is present.
Exceptional APA formatting.
