Prepare 100-mL of 0.7 M hydrochloric acid solution by diluting an appropriate volume of 3.0 M hydrochloric acid solution. Use this dilute solution to titrate a known mass (between 1 and 1.5 g) of strontium hydroxide octahydrate dissolved in about 50 mL of deionized water. Use appropriate glassware for the titration that will enable you to swirl without losing solution. Include a description of what you do to prepare the solution as well as all necessary data and calculations. Use phenolphthalein solution as the indicator for this reaction.

My data:

  • 0.023 L of 3M HCl were calculated for dilution
  • mass of solid Sr(OH)2 = 1.026 g
  • Titrated amount of HCl to reach end point = 11.40 mL

Question:

  1. Do water molecules in the formula for the solid strontium 8-hydrate need to be included when determining the moles of the solid used? Why or why not?
  2. Calculate the volume of 0.7M HCl solution required to react completely with the exact amount of strontium hydroxide 8-hydrate you weighed
  3. Calculate the theoretical yield of the salt produced in the reaction
  4. Calculate an error analysis
  5. How well do experimental results compare with theoretical equations and calculations?
