THESIS TOPIC TITLE
Trouble on Collectibles: The Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on Debt Collections of Gemma Cruz Learning Center
BACKGROUND
Gemma Cruz Learning Center
A Kumon Method of Learning franchise. An after-school individual learning program that offers Math and Reading that aims its students to develop academic mastery, discipline and life skills with the use of Kumon Worksheets assigned everyday and instructors to bring out the potential of each student.
Established in 1999 in Ayala Alabang, Muntinlupa City, it became one of the top Kumon centers nationwide, and even in the Asia Pacific Region. Reached the highest number of students last 2011, with 1,000 plus students enrolled.
The pre-pandemic process of enrolment will start from the inquiry. We accept inquiries via walk-in, phone calls, and Facebook page messages. We will first ask if Alabang Town Center is the nearest Kumon center to where they live, the name, grade and how old is their child. We will give them the basic information like the tuition fee and reiterate that Kumon is not a tutorial and a continuous program, at least 1 year commitment is encouraged. Then if they are still interested, we invite them to join the Parent's Orientation where everything they need to know about Kumon and the policies will be discussed. During the orientation, the child will take the diagnostic test, the teacher in charge will observe the abilities and skills of the child and identify the level of the starting level. The diagnostic test will be discussed after the orientation. If the parents and children are ready for the commitment, they will choose a schedule for the once or twice a week session and we will prepare the daily worksheets. They will proceed to enroll and pay for the tuition fee. The fees upon enrollment includes the monthly fee, security deposit - consumable and refundable on their last month and enrolment fee. The enrollment fee comes with a free bag.
The first four center visits of the child will be their training. The child will be trained from answering the worksheets to their posture and even time management at home. Then the child progresses as he does the worksheets daily, mastering each basics and developing his self-learning skills.
The monthly payment is P2,000 per subject and is due every 20th of the month, for the following month. Meaning, if you are paying for the month of March, the due date is February 20.
We send a notice using a green envelope where it is specifically designed for Kumon users where the name of the child, the month and the payment due is stated. It is given 10 days before the due date. Every 25th, we start sending the 2nd notice, reminding parents of the past dues. If still unpaid for the current month, the 3rd notice will be sent via text message from the chief instructor.
There is a Kumon policy wherein no payment, no worksheets but the center doesn't do that because we know our community, we have busy parents that sometimes just overlook the due dates.
During pandemic, the process is still the same but there's no face to face classes anymore. Classes are being held online and per slot. The worksheets are picked-up once a month only so we only see the parents or guardians once a month. We do not give the green envelope anymore for the payment reminder, we do not send out any notice except if it's already the current month and still unpaid, the chief instructor will remind the parents to pay the tuition fee, which is already the 3rd notice from pre-pandemic days.
As a result, we notice a large number of unpaid dues compared to before.
