You watched Aguirre, The Wrath of God (1972),
The New German Cinema is prominent example from the 1970s of International Art Cinema. These are films made by directors who view themselves (and are viewed usually by critics and fans) as artists rather than entertainers or businesspeople. However, they may come from countries whose movie going audience is limited and, thus, when they make their films they take into account the inevitability of their works being exported to other countries. International Art Cinema embodies this principle of artists who create mass popular works that express their ideas about their own cultures and histories but also have themes and characters who can be understood by any film fan anywhere. How does that appear in Aguirre, The Wrath of God? What is Werner Herzog, the director, telling us about German national culture and identity and what type of critique of his society is he presenting? What are the main themes and concerns of the work? What is the directors' view of his country's political tradition and history? What universal themes are presented that also make the film appreciated by audiences outside of Germany?
