Dr. Smith has been the Jones' family doctor for more than 20 years. He is shocked when Mary, the 16-year-old daughter, comes to tell him that she is pregnant and wants his help in getting an abortion. Since abortions are against Dr. Smith's conscience, he refuses. He also informs the parents of Mary's condition and her intentions.

Can the physician justify his action by the use of proportionality between good and evil effects? The good of the profession and the society must be considered in answering the question. Why did a British medical society publicly reprimand this physician?
