The thin red line indicated a fixed pitch for the notes to lock onto so the singer knew where the tune started and where it ended. In my mind this is similar to the way a compass guides a traveler. Once he or she knows where north is, it makes traveling that much easier. Once you find north it's easy to find east, south, and west. The traveler can even return back to where they started with the help of the compass. This is like how a singer can always know where to start and where to end when they sing with the help of the thin red line Another example would be the calendar. When we all know what the day, month, and year is, it makes scheduling much easier. Everyone is on the same page so to speak. The same goes for time. We all agree on what the time is and can all function together. Just as in singing where all the singers can sing the same tune when using the thin red line. With the thin red line everyone knew what notes to sing and the knowledge of hymns and music could be shared and replicated much more easily.
