where N is in 1000 cycles to failure and S is the stress amplitude in 1000 psi. The steel alloy is to be used in the design of an automobile engine that under normal use will experience 20 cycles per second under a stress amplitude of 35,000 psi. It is estimated that typical driver will operate the vehicle 350 hr/yr. If the engine is being designed for a 10-yr life, is the selected material adequate?
