Many biochemical reactions are catalyzed by large protein molecules called enzymes. A typical mechanism for the conversion of a biochemical substrate (S) to product (P) catalyzed by an enzyme (E) invlves the following steps:

E + S <-> ES (where K1 is the forward, and K2 is the reverse rate constant)

ES -> P (K2 is the forward reaction constant)

The rate-determining step is the decomposition of the intermediate enzyme-substrate complex (ES) to prodcuts (P). Under these conditions, show that the overall rate of product formation is

Rate = d[P]/dt = (k1k2[E](T)[S]) / (k-1 + k2 + k1[S])

where [E](T) equals the total enzyme concentration:

[E](T)= [E] + [ES]
