The cohort study was developed from the PHARMO database, an anonymous pharmacy registry database that comprises all pharmacy dispensing records of residents in approximately 50 Dutch municipalities. It contains approximately 2 million patient histories. Included patient records were comprised of individuals with at least two subsequent prescriptions for antidepressants from January 1, 1996 to December 31, 2003. In addition to their research question on the association of antidepressant use and diabetes mellitus, the researchers were also interested in whether this relationship is modified by the Chronic Disease Score (CDS) - a measure of the chronic disease status of patients which is an indicator of an individual's overall health and morbidity. The CDS includes major chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, ulcers, and high cholesterol, amongst others.
