The planned growing of sugarcane on the Tana River Delta Region of Kenya has enormous implications for local people and wildlife of the region. The region is characterised by wetlands of international importance, with many rare and endangered species present.

Assignment Task

Write an essay on ‘The proposal for sugarcane production in the Tana River Delta Region in Kenya. Describe the impacts to the environment and human health associated with this particular enterprise. Structure your essay into five parts as follows :-

i) Introduction/background - briefly describe the sugarcane industry and the market for sugar worldwide. Describe how it is processed and the relevant environmental contamination issues etc. (~300 words)

ii) Expression of a likely viewpoint from a local elder, whose people may be dependent upon the Tana Delta Region for their livelihood (~300 words)

iii) Expression of a likely viewpoint from either a grower/producer/merchant/exporter (your choice, ~300 words)

iv) Expression of a likely viewpoint from a powerful politician in Kenya. (~300 words)

v) Conclusion/overview/recommendations (~300 words)

In points ii), iii) and iv) you may write in first or third person. Write for a hypothetical, not a real person. In your research, demonstrate that you have considered and been guided by the course learning objectives (to found on page 12 of the course introduction booklet).
