Question

The patient is kept on the left lateral side. The back is prepped with Betadine solution, and 1 percent Xylocaine is infiltrated at the L5-S1 interspace. Deep infiltration is carried out with a 22-gauge needle, and a 17-gauge Touhy needle is taken and the epidural performed. After careful aspiration, which was negative for blood and cerebrospinal fluid, about 80 mg of Depo-Medrol was injected along with 5 cc of 0.25 percent Marcaine and 1 cc of 50 mcg of Fentanyl. The injection was done in a fractionated dose in a slow fashion. The patient was examined and evaluated following the block, and was found to have excellent relief of pain. The patient is advis.
