The Native American “mascot controversy” is one that elicits fierce debates and has been the subject of considerable historical and anthropological research. While much of the debate centers on whether or not the use of mascots is considered offensive and to whom and how, a related and often overlooked issue has to do with who has the right to appropriate and define culturally specific symbols and for whom—an issue called positionality. Hence many Native Americans believe that the appropriation of such symbols is an illegitimate practice, one possibly condoned by the historical unequal power relations between Indian tribes and the wider American society.
