Discussion : Academic Values and Professional Ethics - A Comparison

Walden's mission is to provide a diverse community of career professionals with the opportunity to transform themselves as scholar-practitioners so that they can effect positive social change (2012). Their vision is that a distinctively different 21st-century learning community where knowledge is judged worthy to the degree that it can be applied by its graduates to the immediate solutions of critical societal challenges, thereby advancing the greater global good (2012).

This is similar to social work core values in which they strive to enhance human well-being and help meet the basic human needs of all people, with particular attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty (NASW, 2008). Both Walden University and the National Association of Social Workers are committed to their new graduates and professionals becoming that "change agent" of the future.

In the case of Pedro, the 58-year-old, heterosexual, Dominican male who is HIV, I see the ethical dilemma being him not adhering to his medical treatment correctly (Plummer &Brocksen, 2014).

Research in Access to Care in the Homeless (REACH) conducted a study that proved a strong relationship between the level of adherence to antiretroviral therapy and the risk of progression to AIDS in a population-based cohort of HIV-positive, urban poor adults with a high risk of non-adherence, showed that the non-adherence patients who failed to obtain scheduled pharmacy refills was associated with a more rapid progression to AIDS and death (Bangsberg, et al..., 2001). Even though

I would want to follow the values of both Walden and the NASW in which you effect positive social change and empower the oppressed, by not following his prescribed treatment under the highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) he is putting himself and possibly his family in danger. In this case, I would have to gain more of an understanding of why Pedro is not following his treatment plan, under the principles of NASW this would be competence.

Without even knowing the mission and values of Walden or NASW I believe I was prepared to be a change agent. Learning their mission and value has just added fuel to the fire when it comes to me wanting to help the children of Baltimore become better than even they believe they can be. Walden list six different types of social change agents, choosing from this list I would say I would be the UltracommittedChange-Makers (2017).

I have dedicated most of my life to making a difference and I want to continue doing that in this new career. The statement of, "they want to make a difference in people's lives because others have made a difference in theirs" (2017) is the best statement to help describe my passion for this career and wanting to help others.

Discussion - Consider the similalites between the NASW'S Social Work core values and Waldens mission and vision.

Bot of the NASW social work core values and waldens mission states on engagementof up lifting that are building relationship with the students, clients, staff, and other resources that are being provided.

Then select either the Pedro case or the Debra case and identify a potential to thhat dilemma and reflect on how the Walden mission and vision as well as the NASW ethical standards might influence your decison.

In the case of Pedro a dilemma that might be reaching that goal of building a relationship that can assits Pedro in getting him the most resources that can help him reach his goals with the process and individually.

Finally think about how the mission and vision and values might inform your role as a social change agent.

Being able to see everyone potential that everyone has, and advocating for them effectively.
