The motor carrier industry is the “lifeblood” of the U.S. economy in the sense that trucks move over 10 billion tons of freight (or 71% of the nation’s freight by weight) annually, and the motor carrier industry generated $740 billion in gross freight revenues which represented roughly 82% of the nation’s bill.

Do research on the U.S. motor carrier industry and answer the following questions:

1) The motor carrier industry has played a significant role in the economic development during the 21st century. The transportation mode that played a significant role in the economic development as well as the geographic expansion during the 19th century was the railroad industry. What factors had contributed to the transition of the transportation mode from the railroad to the motor carrier as a "lifeblood" mode of transportation? What factors account for the motor carrier's visibility and significance?

2) Among the major issues facing the U.S. motor carrier industry, "safety" has been a key issue. Why has "safety" been a key issue? How should this issue be addressed.
