The main reason women seek medical attention for menopausal symptoms is hot flashes. Dietary supplements containing isoflavones derived from natural sources such as soy or red clover are marketed as an alternative treatment for such symptoms and are being used increasingly by women in the United States. Isoflavones are polyphenol compounds that are similar in structure to estrogens.

This study was carried out to determine whether two dietary supplements derived from red clover were more effective than placebo in reducing hot flashes in post-menopausal women. The study was conducted using 252 menopausal women, aged 45 - 60 years, who were experiencing at least 35 hot flashes per week. The women were randomly assigned to three treatment groups, two of these receiving one of two herbal remedies and the other group receiving placebo. Are either of these herbal remedies more effective than placebo in treating hot flashes?
