Percy’s “The Loss of the Creature” provides a rather provocative way to end a semester of reading, writing and thinking about education. Write a 4-5 page essay in which you consider Percy’s ideas as they apply to a student living in a developed culture. How can we restore our role from that of a mere consumer to that of one “exercising the sovereign right of a person in his lordship and mastery of creation” (489)? Design some examples that mimic what Percy illustrates with his dogfish and Shakespearean sonnet, and suggest ways to reaffirm the necessity of unmediated seeing and thinking in academia. Be concrete and specific in inventing strategies for students to reclaim their rights as sovereign individuals. Be sure that your essay is in constant conversation with Percy’s text.
