Assignment Brief and Guidance
Theme: The potential for Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) to transform the industry.
Assignment topic: The implications of MMC for sustainability
The increasing economic, social, and environmental impacts from the processes of construction become a serious concern which may cause significant damages to ecosystems. It may affect the health of site workers and residents near the construction sites. A recent study shows that construction industry is the third largest industry sector in creating environmental pollution and generating 25% of the total construction waste volume. Therefore, it is necessary for the construction industry to consider other construction methods so as to achieve the objective of sustainable construction and reduce the adverse implications of construction. One possible method is the use of Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) that may offer improvements in sustainability in terms of environmental, social, and economic performance. Modern methods of construction primarily involve the manufacture and fabrication of some parts, such as wall and floor units, in factories. MMC has potential environmental, social, and economic benefits.
You are a Management Trainee of an old fashion construction company in Hong Kong. Your company is still using traditional building methods. Traditional building method may be defined as many of the components of the building are pre-fabricated through various processes in the construction site. You are designated by the Senior Manager of your project team to be responsible for finding some construction projects in Hong Kong which use MMC to complete. You are required to submit a research report EITHER 1 or 2 of the following projects to the Senior Manager on or before 17th January 2022.
Project 1: The Disciplined Services Quarters at Pak Shing Kok, Tseung Kwan O, Kowloon for the Fire Services Department
The project includes five blocks with 18 storeys on each block. It has eight units on each floor, producing a total of 720 three-bedroom units of 50 square metres. It has ancillary facilities such as covered walkway, supermarkets, restaurants, playground, and communal areas. The total construction floor area reaches 47,000 square metres. The project started in August 2018 and was completed in the first quarter 2021. It is understood that the project uses one of the modern methods of construction (MMC) to complete.
Project 2: Students can choose a construction project in which they are familiarized to study for this project. But it must be completed by using MMC.
In your report, you need to describe:
- What type (s) of MMC the project was(were) used?
- How these methods can improve the sustainability in terms of environmental, social, and economic performance for the residents in this Disciplined Services Quarters?
- Will you recommend these MMC to your company for future development of the residential construction projects of your company? What are the reasons?
Your research report shall focus on research methodology, literature review and analysis. Proper referencing and professional presentation are a MUST.
In addition, in this assignment, you shall establish your aims and objectives for the project. Outline objectives and timeframes based on the project. Identify the main components of a project specification and explain why the project specification is important to a successful project outcome. You shall also produce an appropriate project management plan including resources planning, cost planning and timescales to meet objectives and timeframes. Describe appropriate techniques to be applied throughout the project if problems encounter. Evaluate the relationship between project planning, identification and feasibility with consideration of the impact of project scope on time and resources.
It is necessary for you to explore what kind of the project management strategies to suit for the project and justify a range of potential solutions throughout the project. Compared with the outcomes of initial planned resources against actual outcomes. Moreover, you must produce a written research report to generate knowledge which will form the basis for analysis of the project and use appropriate forms of referencing and citation in the written report. Prepare a presentation of your final project outcomes and make recommendation to audience. Appraise your own performance in managing the project, draw conclusion and make recommendation for your future improvement.
Evidence of your report is not limited but could take the form of:
A Technical Report (This will be based on your logbook, interim reviews and research)
1. Introduction
The introduction shall include the type of study (case study or research study) and explain the reasons for your choice in relation to your company. With the type of project selected, you shall characterize the project (e.g., energy saving orientated, construction time orientated).
2. Literature review
Basic of the characteristic of the project, you shall conduct a literature review for primary and secondary research sources data information in connection with your study.
3. Methodology
In this part, you shall select the approach in data collection. Your methods could be included calculation, comparison, interviews, questionnaire survey, etc.) You shall give the reason for your selection.
