Assignment Brief and Information

Theme: The potential for Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) to transform the industry

Topic: The implications of MMC for sustainability

Project Scenario:
Working as a Site Manager on a "Design and Build" project, you have been asked to develop and appraise a specification for your current project, in order for it to be successful.

As your company is the principle contractor for this project, you have also been asked by the client to introduce a good selection of modern methods of construction in to your project, plus to also highlight and discuss any implications with respect to sustainability.

Task 1:
Select an appropriate project from the choices below, then develop a set of specification points that are critical for the project to be a success. Once you have completed this, then you are required to evaluate the relationship between project identification, feasibility and project planning, with consideration of the impact of project scope on time and resources, and you are to also explain why the project specification is of fundamental importance to a successful project outcome.

Project selection
Your project should be based on one of the following construction projects:
1) Affordable Housing in the Sheffield City Region
2) The construction of the Waterside Project Chesterfield
3) Infrastructure works - (one or more) for the waterside project or Staveley regeneration
4) A construction project of your own choice - approved by your tutor

Task 2:
i) Using your specification, you are required to prepare and update a project management plan, using standard systems of time and resource tracking, whilst also identifying potential resources, costs and timescales. Some or all of the following should be developed/considered/discussed.
a) Resources and resource planning, Costs and cost planning
b) Gantt charts
c) Project Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) charts, Critical Path Method (CPM).
d) Progress tracking - project logbook, Milestones.

Task 3:
Again, using your developed specification, you are required to describe a range of appropriate techniques for generating solutions.

Task 4:
Throughout your project scope/criteria and planning, you are to introduce and highlight modern methods of construction discuss any implications with respect to sustainability.
