The global impact of obesity is far-reaching, as it affects people from every corner of the world. Rates of overweight and obesity are highest among high-income countries, with an estimated 39% of adults being classified as obese. In lower-income countries, rates of overweight and obesity have been increasing rapidly over the last few decades. In Africa, for example, the prevalence of adult obesity has more than doubled since 1980. In Latin America, almost 30% of adults are considered obese. In Asia, where rates of overweight and obesity were once lower than in other regions, an estimated 671 million people are now classified as obese or overweight. The cultural nursing perspective on obesity is focused on understanding the underlying social and cultural causes of the health problem. These causes can range from poverty and lack of access to healthy food to cultural norms that promote unhealthy eating and lifestyle habits.
