The environment can play a significant role in how projects are performed. An example of this comes from implementing Connect Care/Epic, an electronic medical record, across Alberta. The rollout of this system requires a strong and reliable Wi-Fi connection for the rover scanners to talk to their computer base, which is over several hundred meters away. New hospitals across Alberta have been built with fibre optic cables and hubs to support better Wi-Fi transmission, and the newer system was easily installed. Older hospitals required significant retrofits to install large antennas in the ceiling to support connectivity in areas with more concrete. As we prepare to launch this system in correctional facilities across the province, environmental considerations will further compound this issue. Jails are built with extremely thick concrete, and some of the facilities are in areas that do not even have Wi-Fi outside of the buildings because they are so remote. Additionally, jails intentionally try to block wifi signals to prevent inmates from smuggling in cell phones and intentionally steal wifi signals to communicate with people outside of the jail. The environmental context matters for the planning, implementation, and follow-up of a project, as small differences in the setting.
