Ava owns an accounting firm which is a service business and must store the customer records on a dedicated data server, per government regulations. Hence, no customer record is stored locally on the employee’s computer. The data server is owned and operated by a third-party company – Ava’s accounting firm simply pays fees for using the data server. Three years ago, she replaced all computers for all employees when the firm had 2,000 customers. Recently, most of her employees have been complaining that their computers were running slow. The firm uses the same software as three 3 years ago and there were no upgrades or changes to the software at all – The software does not use more memory to run and does not consume more CPU time. The firm now has 5,000 customers with the size of each customer record has been doubled, compared to 3 years ago. Ava cannot afford of replacing the computers for her employees and does not believe that getting new computers will solve the issue. For each of the employees’ computers, Ava is thinking about (1) upgrading CPU, (2) adding more memory, or (3) adding more disk space.
