In drive units of mechatronic systems, it is necessary to minimize backlash. Discuss the reasons for this. Conventional techniques for reducing backlash in gear drives include preloading (or spring loading), the use of bronze bearings that automatically compensate for tooth wear, and the use of high-strength steel and other alloys that can be machined accurately to obtain tooth profiles of low backlash and that have minimal wear problems. Discuss the shortcomings of some of the conventional methods of backlash reduction. Discuss the operation of a drive unit that has virtually no backlash problems.
