The first three chapters of the book Controversial Therapies for Autism and Intellectual Disabilities: Fad, Fashion, and Science in Professional Practice made a huge impression on my viewpoints of medicine and behavioral treatment. I was mind blown that only 100 years ago the majority of medical procedures administered were actually more harmful than beneficial to patients. Since these practices were painful and unpleasant, alternative medicine flourished and became more popular than the traditional medicine. The book mentions how associations rated ABA the number 1 intervention for many disabilities and developmental delays. I was talking with someone that's a psychology major and he didn't believe this. He told me that he thinks ABA is intrusive and restrictive, and that it doesn't generalize to other environments. He was being ignorant in this specific instance, but I cant blame him. He told me his professors told him this. I'm glad there are books like this to educate and inform people of the realities of evidence based interventions and how vital they are to modern medical and behavioral practices.
