The Case of Evelyn

Evelyn worked for an automotive steel casting company. She was part of a small group asked to investigate the cause of an operating problem that had developed in a new luxury automobile and to make recommendations for its improvement. The problem did not directly make an unsafe condition but it did lead to irritating sounds.

Evelyn's supervisor told the group that the problem is due to the type of metal used in the castings. Evelyn and a lab technician conducted tests and found conclusive evidence that the problem was not due to the metal type used. Evelyn and the lab technician suspected the noise was caused by some other thing and they were right. Later, the supervisor told Evelyn that the problem had been solved. And the top management had agreed with the supervisor's decision.

Her supervisor, in his report, wrote that the noises were due to the wrong type of metal being used. All of the data from Evelyn's experiments had been changed or deleted. The report and all the data was changed to "prove" that the type of metal used was responsible for the problem.
