This discussion focuses on understanding structural and non-structural mitigation, and the differences between the two. In addition, you will apply what you learned about these mitigation measures. Consider walking around your community and inspecting your home prior to embarking on this discussion.

Most mitigation efforts can be placed into two different categories: structural mitigation and non-structural mitigation. Structural mitigation refers to physical changes to the built environment that lessen disaster impacts.

Examples are building dams and levees to prevent flooding, hardening facilities to withstand the impact of a terrorist attack, and designing bridges to endure severe shaking.

Non-structural mitigation efforts change human behavior about disasters. Examples of non-structural mitigation include public education programs focusing on tornado warnings, local land use planning that turns floodplains into parks rather than housing developments, and practicing good hygiene during cold and flu season.

What is the hazard mitigation planning process? Discuss the basic steps, what each means, and identify the components of each step. In this discussion, you will focus on the hazard mitigation planning process.
