Main ideas/Main points are the major divisions of your speech or the key points you further develop. if you're thesis or topic is "Cal State Los Angeles has the best nursing program in the Cal State system," your main ideas would need to give general reasons as to why Cal State LA has the best program. The following would be some main ideas you could focus on...
1-It has experienced faculty
2-Students have high passing rates of board exam
3-The school offers many resources
Main ideas alone are usually not enough to build your argument or convince your audience. You can't simply tell someone to attend Cal State LA because it has good faculty and expect them to do it. For someone who is serious about their selection of schools, they would want more information, more proof. That's where your supporting material comes in. Supporting material further develop main ideas and include specific facts, testimonies, statistics and other evidence. So in this instance, you can support your main idea of "experienced faculty," by providing examples of faculty members and the number of years of experience they have or perhaps the schools they graduated from.
For each of the following topics, come up with 3 main ideas that you could focus on in each particular speech.
1. Television is a bad influence for kids
2. Homework should be banned
3. Benefits of online classes
