Question

Jorge Luis Borges sometimes presents his works of fiction as non-fiction. This is directly evident in "The Approach to Al-Mu'tasim." Some are puzzled by this approach to writing. But why does it matter (if indeed it matters at all) that we know whether the story we are reading is true or not? Should we care whether it is history or fantasy? These questions take on extra complexity in the story mentioned above because in it Borges presents us with layers of stories within stories. Furthermore, it seems that at least one (and maybe all) of these stories are centered around the pursuit of truth. Comment. Consider these issues and take into account what theories or questions about the nature and significance of truth are raised by Borges.
