As your book mentions and as we will discuss in class, the American War for Independence was as much a civil war between Americans as it was a war between Americans and the British. Each side had a regular, or professional army, i.e. the Continental Army and the British Army, and each side had militias, which were smaller units of volunteer fighters. Large numbers of Americans fought on both sides, and the violence victimized civilians as well as soldiers. Nowhere in America was this civil war as bloody or widespread as in the South Carolina upcountry, as the primary sources quoted in the document attest.
