The Affordable Care Act (ACA) or also known as Obama Care, is a law that was signed in 2010 that was aimed to provide affordable health insurance for Americans. The ACA was meant to improve quality and access to health care, lower health care cost and also adding new consumer protections. This act has brought on a lot of controversy. Like many laws and acts there are many pros and cons that come with the Affordable Care Act. Some of the pros of the ACA are that more Americans now have health insurance, as well as insurance becoming more affordable. This act also makes it easier for people with pre-existing conditions to get coverage and not be denied. The Act was meant for more people to qualify for insurances. Also under this Act more screenings and preventive services are covered. However, the cons of the ACA that people are not happy about are that many people now have to pay higher premiums, if you do not have insurance you are fined, taxes have been going up as a result of the ACA. According to Roland (2015), many people had to cancel their existing health insurance because their insurance didn’t meet the ten essential health benefits. And many of these same people when switching to different insurance ended up paying more than they originally where. There are also some states that have chosen not to expand on Medicaid because of the ACA. The ACA has affected people in different ways, there are a lot of people who are better off because they are able to get affordable health insurance, while others it is the opposite and are paying more for their health insurance. The Affordable Care Act is not perfect and may not be have fixed everything that was wrong with health care, but it is a start.
