• College students were randomly assigned to same-sex dyads. Participants included heterosexual individuals, gay men, lesbians, bisexual individuals, and transgenders. The experimenter announced a coffee break, after which he asked participants to rate the etiquette of their partner. The undergraduate girls rated the girl partners higher than they rated the male partners. The men in this study rated the girls highly only when the girls were ladylike and not assertive (i.e., when they did not initiate social exchanges or change a topic of conversation). However, the lower etiquette ratings were assigned by the men to the other guys. Independent observations indicated that the guys acted more masculine with the other guys than with the girls but that the girls were more masculine with the other girls than with the assertive men. A psychological test battery was given to gay men and women and to normal men and women to determine whether there is a relation between assertiveness and sexual identity.
• In a study on ethnic bias, expert judges classified callers as Negro, Caucasian, or Oriental on the basis of voice characteristics. The researchers then determined the proportion of callers in each group who were urged to seek an abortion. After each researcher made a classification, they added that information to the tally sheet. The data from this study supports the existing evidence of bias in sexual health advice.
