Over the past decade, tensions between North and South Korea have fluctuated. Kim Jong-un and Moon Jae-in met to address these issues to discuss denuclearization and peace (Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea, 2018). The first summit occurred on April 27, 2018, in Panmunjom, located in the Demilitarized Zone. During this meeting, they focused on the Panmunjom Declaration, which aimed to cease hostile acts, promote economic cooperation, and work towards a future peace treaty to formally end the Korean War. (Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea, 2018) Following the initial summit, several additional meetings were held, concentrating on reducing military tensions, facilitating family reunions for those separated by the Korean War, and enhancing bilateral relations. Despite these efforts, the two main achievements were that it marked the first time a North Korean leader set foot in South Korea and led to a temporary de-escalation of military tensions along the border (BBC News, 2018).
