1. The temperature inside a refrigerator is 4oC, and the ambient temperature in the kitchen is 25oC. Heat leaks into the refrigerator at 300W.

(a) If we assume that the refrigerator’s motor is a Carnot heat pump and that the approach temperature in the coils is 5oC, how much power must be supplied to the refrigerator?

(b) Now suppose that the approach temperature is 2oC. How does this affect the power requirement?
