Technology plays a critical role in everyday life, from driving your car to mobile banking to medical care; nearly every aspect of our lives is influenced by technology. Healthcare has seen tremendous advancements in healthcare-associated technology that have been shown to improve processes, lower costs, and play an essential role in helping people maintain health and well-being (Bohr & Memarzadeh, 2020). The intensive care unit (ICU) is a specialized unit aimed at caring for those who are critically ill and require constant, intensive monitoring and treatments (Hinkle et al., 2022). Patients in the ICU often face life-threatening conditions and require highly specialized technological support to stabilize and improve their condition. The ICU is set up to handle complex needs such as continuous monitoring, advanced respiratory support, hemodynamic monitoring, infection control, rapid intervention, fluid management, antibiotic therapy, and specialized professionals and equipment (Marshall et al., 2017). A patient, Mr. Jones, could be admitted to the ICU and present with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and a history of type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and congestive heart failure (CHF). These comorbidities exacerbate the respiratory distress, causing this patient to require intubation and mechanical ventilation. Due to ARDS, Mr. Jones would need respiratory support.
