Technique for making ethical decisions

Most people consider that they practice some form of utilitarianism in thinking through their actions. Do you agree with this statement? Are the results of behavior all that really matter? If things work out the best for nearly everyone involved, regardless of the intent, is that a problem?

Consider the approaches for thinking about ethical behavior advanced by Rawls and by Scanlon. Does either of them seem practical? How could you use one or the other technique for making ethical decisions?

Think of the implications of ethical egoism. Does the system of private enterprise and economics assume people should be motivated solely by self-interest? What do you think about the claim by Gordon Gekko that "greed is good," in the film Wall Street? In the final analysis, is he right? Can we be expected to behave in any other way than to put our own needs first? Are there instances when you have put (or feel you should have put) the interests of others ahead of your own?

How realistic is the expectation that we can really put aside our own agenda in order to dialogue ethically with someone else? Why do you this this?

Can you think of a time when you and another person had a conversation during which time both of you were totally engaged with the other? How did that go?
