Teaching Writing as Literacy Development
Part 1. increase the academic rigour of final year students pursuing the master's degree in Literacy Studies.
Part 2. increase the motivation and engagement of classroom teachers in the literacy development of learners.
Part 3. improve the confidence and self-perceptions of teachers in the field; and
Part 4. engage practitioners in demonstrating competence in planning for and executing writing as a route to the literacy development of learners of all ages.
You will prepare a portfolio with the following samples as evidence of your competence in planning for literacy development in the writing classroom / and or sustaining literacy development through writing by making connections with social issues and engaging and empowering learners of all ages as problem solvers . The project is solutions-oriented in its approach.
TASK A - Sample 001 INDIVIDUAL WORK (not exceeding 2,000 words)
Write a position paper for the class/school project you have identified. Your paper should demonstrate knowledge and skills in applying global principles and practices to your local context . Your paper should demonstrate your role as an advocate and activist for the philosophy, principles and practices advanced in your position paper:Background : Brief overview of social problem impacting students' learning; rationale for policy/ reform/intervention /school action etc. 2. Literature Review: This review is expected to provide deeper insights for the theories, practices and approaches that underpin your project. 3. Include a 5-siide power point presentation of the essence of your position paper.
TASK B - Sample 002INDIVIDUAL WORK OR PAIR WORK
Design the CONTENT for intervention/innovation programme that will be implemented to foster writing as literacy development in situated learning contexts. Your intervention should be guided by the principles of key theories, research and practice explored in the course and reflect a deep sensitivity towards age-appropriate learning materials in literacy development:
Your position paper should guide this project.
Your intervention/innovation MUST demonstrate the following in practical / hands-on ways. This is the ready for use aspect of your project:
1. FOCUS ON WRITING : genre -based / process-writing / and must be linked to literacy development / social activity/ You must include samples of these tasks in your portfolio .
These tasks should have built -in templates to support/scaffold students writing. These should be ‘ready -use' templates. ( 20 Marks)
2. FOCUS ON LITERACY ENABLING STRATEGIES: Design these. These can be ‘stand- alone' strategies or can be embedded in activities. You must , however, provide a glossary of these strategies that can guide teachers in understanding their purpose and use.
Describe EACH literacy -enabling strategy that will be used in this intervention.
( Remember this is a writing intervention for literacy development ) Treat this like
"notes for the Practitioner. This should be arranged in alphabetical order like a glossary
3. USE OF TECHNOLOGY : How will your project use online resources for writing/publishing etc Do not just say you will create blogs - Create the blog! / provide a template for Blog writing etc.
TASK C Implementing the Intervention ( WHOLE GROUP/SMALL GROUPS)
Prepare the Training package ( built from TASK B) you will use to train a group of Literacy Coaches, GuidanceCounsellor and Deans of Discipline in an on-line setting . This should include the Tasks participants will do (online ) webinars , effective power-point slides, videos YOU created for them to view etc.
For this task you will work together as a group to determine which projects can be grouped together to create at least THREE online workshops to be delivered in August 2020 via zoom conferencing.
