Assignment: Working with Historical buildings and recording significance, Heritage Values and Conditions / Remedial works. (2000 words).
Learning Outcome 1: Explain the context of building refurbishment and adaptation within the life cycle of a building.
Learning Outcome 2: Understand and apply the principles of Conservation, Restoration and adaptation and associated legislative processes including Planning and Listed Building consents.
Learning Outcome 3: Develop techniques for carrying out inspections and produce a full Building Survey Report.
Learning Outcome 4: Produce design proposals, details and specifications for both remedial and new work in a conversion and adaptation project.
Task 1: Listed Status, History, Context : Using the ‘Historic England' website identify one building in your area that is listed
Carry out research and on-site analysis/investigation on the selected building and provide a summary of its history. Include any information regarding the original layout and how it evolved in time. Please attach maps, drawings, sketches and photographs.
Task 2: Heritage Assets / Significance : Highlight / Identify Heritage assets and significance of the building considering the following values:
• Historical
• Aesthetic
• Social / Cultural
• Craftmanship / Materials
• Design
• Use
Task 3: Conditions: Undertake a general Inspection / conditions survey and produce written notes, pictures and sketches of 3 exterior conditions / defects of the building. Detail possible causes of these defects. You may use the RICS Standard Conditions Survey Form
Task 4: Remedial works: Propose through sketches, drawings and specification how the defects can be rectified and made good without compromising the ‘values' identified in Section 2.
Your report should be enhanced with notes, hand sketches and drawings that will best describe your intensions for conserving the character of the building. Produce a reflective practice report recording your performance and learning.
