Question

The U.S. Congress has passed a bill requiring that candidates for President must disclose their tax returns for a decade preceding the election. The current President, not running for reelection, signs it into law. Several presidential candidates sue claiming that this law violates their rights to privacy, rights to free to speech and free expression of religion. By a close vote, the Supreme Court agrees with the candidates and strikes down the law. Under what legal theory and authority does the Supreme Court have the jurisdiction to strike down a law passed by Congress and signed by the President, and what case established this principle in U.S. law?
