When we talk about assimilation, for instance, the pretense is that we embrace neutral values like "equality," "individualism," "work ethic," ... and the other variants of what it means to be "an American."
The reality, however, is that the logic of assimilation is that we demand groups to embrace, wholesale, a bunch of thick cultural standards, attitudes toward life, family, religion, community, etc. Language is a good example of this.
In other words, assimilation, in effect, requires that we make other cultures pathologies, things that need to be erased or otherwise dealt with.
In the most sympathetic version of this story, these cultures need to be tolerated by a dominant group that has agreed to allow them to exist.
Reclaiming one's cultural expression therefore is an act of resistance.
