Low-Stakes Writing 2: Setting Goals
Background
To complete this assignment, you will need to take several inventories related to communication. The inventories are available in a PDF, you do not submit the completed inventories to the dropbox. Note: Low-Stakes Writing is developmental writing - communication of creative thought and opinionated ideas in a structured format.
Assignment Instructions
You will complete five inventories related to communication. The first two are the Writing Apprehension Test (WAT) and the Self-Perceived Communication Competence Scale (SPCC). These two inventories give you a sense for your comfort writing (WAT) and speaking (SPCC) in different settings. Please note, they are measures only of your comfort and not of your skills or abilities. The other three give you a sense for the communication skills you believe you already have and those you might need to develop: a listening types inventory, a perspective taking inventory, and a communication competence inventory. Together, these inventories give you a picture of you as a communicator. Because communication competency is a skill you can continuously improve, you will work to develop your strengths and weaknesses this semester.
In this assignment, you will reflect on your results and set goals for your learning in BMGT 205 this semester. To do this, please:
- Summarize your results for each of the five inventories. Identify areas of comfort and/or competency you already have. Then, discuss how you plan to grow in those areas across this semester.
- Identify at least three areas of comparative discomfort and/or weakness. Then, state goals for your growth this semester related to those areas, being specific about how you aim to develop in those areas across this semester.
Begin to write your summary below the line, you may continue on the reverse side of this document. Please note that well-developed paragraphs often contain six to eight well-written sentences for each paragraph. Review your written document prior to upload. Check to see that you have a topic sentence, sufficient content to support your topic sentence, and a concluding sentence for each paragraph. You may wish to include your scores as part of the summary as it may help to demonstrate that the inventories were taken. Please note that you will take the inventories again at the end of the semester. Having the scores readily available will help you make a comparison at the end of the semester.
Save the document as a Word Document or PDF. Use the naming convention found in our syllabus under "Student Responsibilities." Upload it to the D2L dropbox by the published deadline.
