Diana McIntyre notes that a key element of effective teamwork is strong interpersonal or "human" skills. However, before we can effectively work with others, we must first understand ourselves and know how we adapt to styles that are different from our own.  When there's an insufficient level of understanding of these differences, tension or conflict can arise amongst team members. This will likely result in less than optimal grades in group assignments. 

Diana reviewed some examples where tensions or challenges can arise in teamwork due differences in styles.

• Decision-Making:  Take charge approach so the team can make fast decisions vs. taking a collaborative approach so as to gain team consensus.
• Conflict Style: Direct approach, expressses strong attitudes/opinions vs. Indirect apporach that disenages and clams up when conflict/tension is perceived.
• Work & Time Priorities: Differences in work/time priorities. Early Bird, dislikes 11th hour rush vs. Laissez-Faire, relaxed, do-it-tomorrow attitude.
• Communication Styles: Reflective, values order, needs time to process vs. Animated/Emotive, speaks fast, thinks out loud, seems to be unorganized.
• Group Goals: Members aim for A+ to retain high GPA vs. Those who just want to pass the course (with minimal effort)
• Skill Level: Diverse skills and work experience.  Second Career parent with relevant job/course experience vs. High school grad, no prior job experience

The key to effective teamwork is seeking to understand and appreciate style differences and being able to adapt our behaviour accordingly.
